This digital illustration creates a colorful, imaginative representation of a young Black woman proudly embracing her culture. I hope that it will serve as an inspiration and source of joy for all who experience it.
Decoration Day (July 2022)
A digitally illustrated ode to a generational holiday originated and celebrated within the Black American community here in the United States—Decoration Day. More widely known as Memorial Day within the States, the holiday was initiated by Black Americans in honor of their fallen loved ones and community members in a post-Civil War tribute in the late 19th century. This longtime tradition has since passed down from generation to generation, resulting in annual celebrations as shown in the illustration to honor deceased relatives and loved ones on the last Sunday of May.
Juneteenth Celebration (August 2022)
A digitally painted celebration of Juneteenth, the oldest nationally commemorated holiday celebrating the federal emancipation of enslaved Black Americans and end of chattel slavery in the United States. This illustration showcases the African Diaspora's ability to cultivate moments of joy and happiness in the midst of hardship. It demonstrates the unbreakable joy and innovation of Black people all over the world who have been able to find and create reasons to smile even when times were especially tough.
Breakdance (June 2022)
A colorful digital illustration showcasing the dynamic styles of self-expression that exist and live boldly within the Black American community. This illustration depicts a spontaneous young, Black man striking a pose mid-dance sequence to the awe and joy of a gathered audience within a cityscape environment. The bold colors and dynamic interaction between all of the elements creates a delightful interpretation of what it feels to see and experience moments of Black joy.
Black Queen (October 2021)
A digital figure study turned graphite illustration. This piece revisits my origins as a predominantly graphite based artist, utilizing the use of value to create a compelling portraiture. The subject matter represents the natural strength and poise of Black women as demonstrated throughout history. Even when excluded from prestigious spaces, Black women created their own.
